The recent Assembly elections in Maharashtra have once again brought the opposition’s tendency to blame Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for unfavorable results into the public eye. A bizarre episode in Markadwadi village, Solapur, where locals attempted to conduct an illegal “re-election” with ballot papers, has become a prime example of political frustration fueled by misguided narratives.
This so-called “re-election,” which was later halted by authorities, stemmed from the dissatisfaction of NCP(SP) MLA Uttamrao Jankar’s supporters, who were upset by his defeat to BJP’s Ram Satpute in Markadwadi—despite Jankar winning the Malshiras Assembly seat by a margin of over 13,000 votes.
Motivated by suspicions about the integrity of the EVMs, these disillusioned villagers took to displaying banners calling for a re-poll, only to be swiftly rebuffed by local authorities. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate rightly denounced the move as illegal and undemocratic.
EVMs: From Congress’s Innovation to Opposition’s Scapegoat
There is an undeniable irony in the situation. The EVM, which was introduced by the Congress party, has now become their primary scapegoat. Villagers like Jayesh pointed out the hypocrisy of the opposition: “They’re undermining democracy itself. Let’s not forget, Congress introduced the EVM.” The opposition’s narrative falters when one remembers that no such objections were raised during the Lok Sabha elections when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won using the same machines.
Markadwadi’s Reality: Development Over Doubt
The situation in Markadwadi, however, tells a different story. BJP’s Ram Satpute, while losing the overall seat, gained significant support in the village due to his developmental initiatives. Villagers like Kaushal provided concrete reasons for Satpute’s popularity, highlighting his efforts to establish a tourist center and secure significant funding for the region. “Bhau has worked tirelessly, securing a lead of 150 votes,” Kaushal said.
Additionally, the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a program focused on women’s empowerment, played a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment. As Onkar wisely pointed out, “Even if we revert to ballot papers, errors can still occur. The benefits of Ladki Bahin Yojana can’t be dismissed.”
Political Opportunism vs. Ground-Level Realities
The opposition’s claims of EVM tampering reek of political opportunism. Villagers like Mithun were quick to call out the inconsistency: “If there were problems with the EVMs, why wasn’t this raised during the Lok Sabha elections? This outcry is against the Constitution.” Indeed, the opposition’s selective outrage diminishes their credibility, especially when compared to the BJP’s emphasis on grassroots development.
“Under the governance of Devendra Fadnavis, Shinde Saheb, and Ajit Dada, there has been widespread appreciation for their corruption-free governance and welfare schemes for women,” noted Adesh Gupta. “The voters know their power and chose Satpute for his contributions.”
EVMs: No Tampering, Just Transparency
The accusations of EVM tampering lose credibility upon closer inspection. As Alok pointed out, “If the EVMs were rigged, why didn’t anyone raise this issue during the Lok Sabha elections? When results favor them, it’s fine. When they don’t, they complain.” This duplicity highlights the opposition’s failure to engage with voters constructively and their overreliance on conspiracy theories.
Respect the People’s Choice
While the villagers’ attempt at a re-poll was misguided, it underscores how easily political narratives can shape public perceptions. Leaders must refrain from undermining democratic institutions for short-term political gain. The people of Markadwadi have already made their choice—they voted for development, not for divisive politics.
As Dinesh wisely stated, “If the EVMs had been tampered with, our MP candidate would have won. But we never complained. Unlike others, we respect the mandate.” It’s time the opposition did the same.
Ultimately, democracy flourishes when all parties respect the process and prioritize governance over grievances. The voters have spoken—let’s focus on moving forward.
