Having styled le mille dollars of pageantry, Bharat Gupta has helped India score the Miss Universe crown after 21 long years and it is only overwhelming to watch him narrate and share the heartwarming winning moments he experienced.
Gupta, the fashion director for Miss Universe 2021 – Harnaaz Sandu, reminisces about his unapologetic efforts in helping India get the crown, challenges and fun moments while directing Harnaaz, fashion icons who inspired him and more in a candid conversation with us.
“I was blessed with a lovely girl to style, Harnaaz, so of course it is a very proud moment for everyone in the country,” Bharat believes it is a privilege to have received the opportunity to direct Sandhu for the Miss Universe pageantry as he also adds how overwhelming it was to have acquired the crown, “The moment India got announced, it was like all of us won, and it was a reflex, all of us just started crying. For the next 15 minutes we were just crying.”
Ask him about his inspiration and why he decided to enter the fashion industry and he credits his fashion-conscious family and sheer his love for styling since the very beginning, “I was doing shows with Shiamak (Davar) and taking classes, I also had a background in journalism and PR, that’s how he started involving me PR for him.” He smiles as he recollects how he turned around from being a dance performer for Miss India in 2015 to styling Miss India pageants and then Miss Universe.
Talking about Miss Universe, he shares his experience of working with Harnaaz, “The most important thing is that she is fearless. She never shies away from trying anything different. You give her a gown she becomes angelic; you give her a lehenga, she becomes coy, you give her a pant suit she becomes powerful. She completely trusted me as a fashion director”
Only a person worthy of trust gains it, it is said. Gupta has proven his mettle, proven his bankability time and again, and one final time by winning it for Harnaaz, winning it for the country.
