The Courage to Start Again: Nivedita Basu on Reinvention After Forty-Five

There’s a particular kind of restlessness that hits people around midlife. Not a crisis exactly, but a quiet question: is this all, or is there more? Most people talk themselves out of answering it. Nivedita Basu didn’t.

For over two decades, Basu has been a familiar force behind the scenes of Indian television, a director, creative leader and a name industry insiders associate with sharp instincts for content. A defining chapter of that journey was at Balaji Telefilms, where she grew through the ranks to become Vice President of Content and Business Alliances. Those years placed her at the intersection of creative vision and business strategy, shaping not just what got made, but why it worked.

It would have been easy to stay within that familiar world. Instead, in 2015, she chose entrepreneurship and launched her own production company, House of Originals. Becoming a producer meant moving away from the security of an established organisation and taking complete ownership of the decisions, risks and outcomes.

What followed was not one reinvention, but several.

Basu went on to work with ULLU, followed by Atrangii and Hari Om, and also had a brief stint with Dangal. Each chapter brought a different audience, platform and way of telling stories. Rather than relying entirely on what she already knew, she continued to adapt to an entertainment industry that itself was changing rapidly.

Her willingness to venture beyond the expected was evident when she became the owner of celebrity cricket team Kolkata Baabu Moshayes in Box Cricket League. On paper, sport and television production might seem like two different worlds, but the move reflected something that has remained constant throughout Basu’s journey: curiosity and the willingness to try something she had never done before.

More recently, Basu stepped beyond entertainment, first exploring hospitality and then moving into publishing with Self-Made Woman, a monthly digital magazine that she founded and has been publishing for the past six months. The magazine celebrates women and their journeys, giving Basu yet another opportunity to create something of her own and build it from the ground up.

And then came perhaps one of her most unexpected reinventions yet: sport.

At an age when most people are encouraged to slow down, Basu chose to become more competitive. She took up squash seriously and has worked her way into the Masters circuit, where she is currently seeded No. 3 in India in her category. What began as a passion has evolved into her pursuit of becoming a professional squash player, with the discipline of regular training, tournaments and competing at a national level.

That is perhaps the more interesting story behind all the titles. Somewhere in her forties, Basu did not slow down to protect everything she had already built. She used it as a launchpad to build something new.

There is a common assumption that reinvention belongs to the young, that ambition has a shelf life and that by a certain age you are meant to consolidate rather than expand. Basu’s journey quietly argues otherwise.

What makes her journey worth paying attention to isn’t simply the list of roles she has occupied. It is the pattern underneath them, a refusal to let any single identity become the final one. Each pivot came with the discomfort of being a beginner again, of trading mastery in one arena for uncertainty in another. That is not a small thing to choose, especially past the point when most people believe those choices are behind them.

Basu’s story isn’t a tidy inspirational arc. It is messier and more honest than that. Reinvention does not necessarily mean discarding everything you have done before. Sometimes it means carrying all those years of experience with you and still having enough curiosity, courage and hunger to ask, what next?

For Nivedita Basu, that answer has moved from television sets to entrepreneurship, from content platforms to hospitality, from publishing to, quite literally, the squash court.

She is still starting again.

And she is not done yet.
