How Ayurveda Can Effectively Treat Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders are caused due to over- or under-function of the Thyroid gland, which is an endocrine glandlocated in front of the neck. Thyroid problems have become widespread in India, with a recent report showing that nearly 1 in every 3 Indian is experiencing some type of Thyroid problem. The report also reveals that cases of Hypothyroidism (under-functioning Thyroid) are more prevalent in North India, whereas the South and West India have more cases of Hyperthyroidism (Over-functioning Thyroid). Thyroid disorders can affect the quality of life with debilitating symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, depression, weight gain, heart palpitations, recurrent infections, breathing problems, menstrual disturbance, etc.

For people diagnosed with Thyroid problems, Ayurveda comes across as an effective treatment option. Ayurveda therapies for Thyroid problems are effective because they target the root cause of the disorder and provide long-lasting relief. Thyroid problems can also be treated with allopathic medicines, but these only provide temporary relief and may also have side effects. In comparison, Ayurveda treatments are based on thousands of years of knowledge and wisdom, and do not have any side effects. Here are some of the Ayurveda therapies that can effectively treat Thyroid problems.

Nasya Therapy: This therapy focuses on clearing the nasal passage, which is the gateway for the ‘prana’ (life force) that enters our body when we breathe. Nasya therapy helps balance the vata, pitta, and kapha doshas, the primary energies that govern the human body. In this therapy, herbal-infused oil is passed through the nasal passage, which clears the passage and relieves accumulated tension and stress. Nasya therapy is widely used for the treatment of Thyroid problems.

Shirodhara: In this therapy, a thin stream of herbal-infused liquid is poured over a particular spot on the head for a specific time period. Shirodhara is very effective in treatment of Thyroid problems, as it provides long-lasting relief from stress, fatigue, anxiety, hypertension, depression, etc. There are various types of Shirodhara involving a combination of herbs with oil, milk, or buttermilk.

Kati Vasti: This is used to treat a wide variety of disorders including Thyroid disorders. The therapy focuses on comforting the areas surrounding the Thyroid gland, which restores balance of the vata, pitta, and kapha doshas.

Head & Foot Massage:There are various nerves in the head and foot that influence the Thyroid gland. Ayurveda head and foot massage areeffective in providing long-lasting relief from various Thyroid related symptoms.
