Jon Ossoff

An American politician, Jon Ossoff currently serves as the senior United States senator from the state of Georgia. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Apart from his political career, Ossoff had earlier been associated with film production and investigative journalism. He became senator in January 2021 and his win is considered to be an important one. Primary reason for that is Georgia senator seat is considered to be a stronghold of Republican Party. It has been with the Republican Party from January 2003 to January 2021.

2020 United States Senate general election in Georgia was a tough one for Ossoff. In terms of votes and percentage share, Ossoff was trailing behind incumbent David Perdue of Republican Party. Perdue had received 49.73 percent of the votes whereas Ossoff got 47.95 percent.

However, as none of the candidates got 50% or more, a runoff election was conducted. This is as per runoff election rules practiced by many states in United States. In Georgia, a runoff election is conducted if none of the candidates reach 50%. The top two candidates take part in the runoff election. In the runoff election, Ossoff emerged successful with 50.61 percent votes.

Early life and education

Ossoff comes from Atlanta, Georgia and was born on February 16, 1987. While his mother is an Australian immigrant, his father has Russian Jewish and Lithuanian Jewish descent. His parents are among the reputable folks in the society. Having spent considerable time with Holocaust survivors as a child, Ossoff is deeply influenced by the incident.

He did his schooling from The Paideia School and completed bachelor of science graduation from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. Later he attended London School of Economics from where he completed his masters in international political economy.

In his early career, Ossoff had worked as a national security staffer. He was also legislative assistant for foreign affairs and defense policy for U.S. representative Hank Johnson. Later, he became MD and CEO of London-based investigative television production company named Insight: The World Investigates (TWI).

Political career

Ossoff began his political journey when he announced his candidature for 2017 Georgia’s 6th congressional district special election. He was ahead in the election, getting 48.12 percent votes. However, as no candidate got 50% or more, a run-off election was conducted. In that, Republican candidate Karen Handel defeated Jon Ossoff by securing 51.78% votes. Ossoff later won in 2021 senate runoff election from Georgia.

During his political career, Ossoff has shared his views on various national and international topics. It includes things like abortion rights, cannabis legalization, capital punishment, criminal justice, foreign policy related to Israel, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, gun control, immigration reforms, minimum wage and LGBT rights.
