Ram Shiromani Verma

Ram Shiromani Verma is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Shrawasti in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Ram Shiromani Verma is a member of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The Shrawasti Lok Sabha constituency was formed in 2008 in accordance with the recommendations provided by the Delimitation Commission of India. It comprises assembly constituencies of Bhinga, Shravasti, Tulsipur, Gainsari and Balrampur. Shrawasti Lok Sabha constituency is popular for Buddhist pilgrimage and it is also believed that it was the capital city founded by Lord Ram’s son Luv.

2019 Lok Sabha election from Shrawasti was a tough battle for incumbent Daddan Mishra of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), as opposition parties such as Samajwadi Party (SP) and BSP were fighting the election under the alliance of ‘mahagathbandhan’. BSP had fielded Ram Shiromani Verma as its candidate, as a clever strategy to attract ‘kurmi’ vote share. Moreover, Ram Shiromani Verma had the support of Muslim voters, which account for around 31% of the population of the constituency.

During the counting of votes, the lead taken by Ram Shiromani Verma continued to fluctuate. He eventually emerged victorious, getting a total of 4,41,771 votes. This is around 44.31%. He won by a slender margin, as compared to 4,36,451 votes received by incumbent Daddan Mishra. Shrawasti was among the few seats that were won by ‘mahagathbandhan’ in 2019 general election in Uttar Pradesh.

Apart from incumbent Daddan Mishra, there was no other real challenge for Ram Shiromani Verma in 2019 Lok Sabha election from Shrawasti. INC was nowhere in the picture and had actually worked to cut votes, most likely against BSP. INC candidate was Dhirendra Pratap Singh who received 58,042 votes, or 5.82% of the total votes cast.
