Satyadev Pachauri is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Kanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prior to becoming an MP, Satyadev had served as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in UP for three terms. He was also a cabinet minister in Government of Uttar Pradesh from 2017 to 2019. Satyadev resigned from his cabinet minister post, as he was chosen to contest 2019 general election from Kanpur.
The Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency comprises Assembly Constituencies of Govind Nagar, Sisamau, Arya Nagar, Kidwai Nagar and Kanpur Cantt. Satyadev has good experience at ground level in Kanpur, as he had already won three terms including from Arya Nagar in 1991. He had also won from Govind Nagar in 2012 Assembly Election.
In 2019 elections, Satyadev was given the task of contesting from Kanpur Lok Sabha seat. Some experts had expressed doubts about this move, as he was chosen over Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP), who had won the Kanpur seat in 2014. Joshi’s win in 2014 was quite important, as he had defeated three-time MP Sriprakash Jaiswal of Indian National Congress (INC). Jaiswal had won Kanpur seat in 1999, 2014 and 2009.
However, Satyadev proved his worth by winning Kanpur seat by a comfortable margin. He defeated Sriprakash Jaiswal by a margin of more than 1.55 lakh votes. Satyadev received 55.63 percent of the votes whereas the runner-up received 37.13 percent. The Kanpur Lok Sabha seat has largely been a fight between Congress and BJP since 1990. Other parties such as Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) do not have strong presence in this constituency. With his win from Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency, Satyadev has further cemented his position in BJP.
