Tihar Jail – This is considered to be the largest jail in India and also the largest in South Asia. Located in Delhi, the Tihar prison complex is huge, covering an area of around 400 acres. Tihar jail of Tihar prison is heavily overcrowded. As compared to the approved capacity of 5,200 inmates, the Tihar jail has more than 14,000 inmates. Gang rivalry is said to be present inside Tihar jail, making it a dangerous place for inmates.

Mumbai Central Jail (Arthur Road Jail) – This is one of the oldest prisons in India. It has an official capacity of 800 inmates, but actual numbers are estimated to be above 2,000. Mumbai Central Jail can be considered a dangerous place due to its high level of corruption, substandard food and unsanitary conditions. Social activists have pointed out that Mumbai Central Jail has limited access to rehabilitative programs. Due to this, inmates do not get any opportunity to follow the path of reform.

Yerawada Central Jail, Pune – Spread across an area of around 500 acres, the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune is one of the largest prison facilities in India. It has an official capacity of around 2,300 inmates, but actual numbers are much higher at around 7,000 inmates. The heavy overcrowding is a key reason that makes Yerawada Central Jail one of the most dangerous jails in India. Overcrowding compromises security and creates unsanitary conditions that can lead to health issues. Moreover, a number of highly dangerous criminals are housed inside Yerawada Jail.

Moradabad Jail, Uttar Pradesh – Presence of notorious criminals and overcrowding are key reasons why Moradabad Jail is considered as one of the most dangerous jails in India. Violent clashes have been frequently reported inside Moradabad Jail. There is so much lack of space that inmates are forced to sleep in shifts. The mix of hardened criminals and petty criminals provides an opportunity for gangsters to recruit new people into their gangs. This creates further challenges for inmates.

Sabarmati Central Jail, Ahmedabad – As compared to official capacity of 1,674 inmates, the Sabarmati Central Jail has actual numbers at more than 3,000 inmates. In addition to overcrowding, security lapses are very common at the Sabarmati Central Jail. This has resulted in dangerous items including lethal weapons being smuggled inside the prison. Cases of jail authorities beating prisoners have also been reported. Due to these reasons, the Sabarmati Central Jail is considered as one of the most dangerous jails in India.
