Leo Docherty is a British politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the constituency of Aldershot. He is a member of the Conservative Party. Aldershot constituency is in Hampshire, located South East of England along the English Channel coast. The Aldershot constituency has been in existence since 1918 and its first elected MP was from Conservative Party. Over the years, the constituency has been retained by the Conservative Party, which is a record.
Leo Docherty has been winning this constituency since 2017. In the 2017 general election, Docherty defeated his nearest rival Gary Puffett of Labour Party by a margin of more than 10,000 votes. Docherty secured more than 55 percent of the votes polled. 2019 general election was even better for Docherty, as he received 3.3 percent more votes than 2017. In 2019 election, Docherty defeated his nearest rival Howard Kaye of Labour Party by a margin of more than 16,000 votes.
Early life and education
Leo Docherty was born on October 04, 1976. He was born in Glasgow, located in Scotland and grew up in the county of Gloucestershire in South West England. He did his graduation from Royal Military Sandhurst and started working as a soldier. He was inducted for field operations in conflict areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
He was part of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, which is part of 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade. This regiment is located in Mons Barracks in Aldershot. He had shared his experience of life as a soldier in a book named “Desert of Death” that was published in 2007. Leo is married to Lucy and they have two children.
Political career
After leaving the Army, Leo had started looking for new opportunities in life. He had once travelled to Afghanistan from Turkey, mostly on horseback, bicycle and on foot. This adventure trip lasted for around six months and it gave Leo a deep perspective of the region. He became interested in the Middle East region. In 2010, he was chosen as the director of the Conservative Middle East Council. In this position, he toured more areas in Middle East in an official capacity.
Leo started his political career in England as a local Councillor and his first face-off was in 2015 general election against a Labour-held seat. However, he came third in that election. His first big opportunity came in 2017, when incumbent Conservative MP Gerald Howarth announced that he will not be participating in the next general election. Subsequently, Leo was chosen to represent the Aldershot constituency, which he has won in 2017 and 2019.
