How to protect your furniture in Monsoon

The monsoons are almost always a much-wanted respite from the sultry summer heat. It’s an artful season, evoking a range of overlapping emotions, from a peaceful pause to an occasional nostalgia. This lush season calls for a breezy décor, and here are a few tips to keep the monsoon blues at bay.

Prep for the monsoon dampness.

Keep the furniture spaced away from each other, from the wall and the windows, to avoid moisture absorption that habituates growth of fungi and bacteria. Protect polished or painted surfaces by avoiding damp cleaning clothes and using protective treatments especially for wooden pieces and the ones in leather.

Make way for better Ventilation

The heavy drapes can be replaced with sheer or lace curtains to bring in more natural lighting, lending an airy and spacious feel to the rooms. This also helps in not only avoiding any moisture build up, but the sunlight also acts as a natural disinfectant and prevents the growth of microbes.

Dehumidify

Alternately, invest in a good dehumidifier to maintain the humidity levels of the spaces.

Enhance the functional decor with a touch of quirkiness.

A contemporary umbrella stand along with a minimal dirt trap mat (jute, coir, rubber) next to the entrance makes for a fun décor while keeping the unwanted mud away. Mixing weatherproof lounging furniture with lush planters and protective bamboo or transparent blinds accentuates the outdoors into a dreamy, relaxing spot.

Roll away the Heavy furnishings

Carpets absorb moisture and form a breeding ground for mould and mildew. Swap out any heavy carpets and store them in a dry place during monsoon. This ensures easy cleaning of the floors and prevents any breeding grounds for insects etc. that may damage the furniture in turn.

Moisture absorbers such as gel packets, placed in wardrobes and cabinets, can help prevent your clothes, linen, and books from getting musty and damp to
