Ravi Kishan Shukla

Ravi Kishan Shukla is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Ravi Kishan was earlier with Indian National Congress (INC) and had contested the 2014 general election from Jaunpur Lok Sabha constituency. However, he lost that election, coming at 6th place. He had received 42,759 votes in that election, which was around 4.25 percent of the total votes cast.

Not happy with his ongoing political career, Ravi Kishan joined BJP in February 2017. Around two years later, he was chosen to contest the 2019 general election from Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. This parliamentary constituency comprises assembly constituencies of Caimpiyarganj, Pipraich, Gorakhpur Urban, Gorakhpur Rural and Sahajanwa.

Since long, Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold of BJP. Yogi Adityanath has been winning from this constituency since 1998. However, the seat was vacated by Adityanath in 2017 after he was chosen as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Then came a big surprise in the 2018 bye-election from Gorakhpur when Praveen Kumar Nishad of Samajwadi Party (SP) defeated BJP candidate Upendra Dutt Shukla. It was a close fight as Praveen won by a margin of around 16k votes.

Next year in 2019, BJP bounced back again with Ravi Kishan Shukla scoring a big win from Gorakhpur. He defeated his nearest rival Ram Nishad of SP by a margin of more than 3 lakh votes. This win firmly established Ravi Kishan as a strong political face in Uttar Pradesh.
