Indian Army, Military Engineering Services & IIT Kanpur host Seminar on Sustainable Military Infrastructure and Emerging Technologies

Kanpur, 06 March, 2025: The Indian Army and Military Engineering Services (MES) in collaboration with IIT Kanpur hosted a landmark seminar focusing on emerging technologies and sustainable infrastructure at Bhopal Military Station. The event, titled “Transforming the Indian Army with New Construction Technologies, Green Energy, and Climate-Resilient Infrastructure,” brought together leading experts from premier institutions and industry leaders to address the critical intersection of military readiness and environmental sustainability.

The seminar builds upon the successful partnership established through a MoU between CWE Jhansi and IIT Kanpur in April 2023, marking a significant step toward creating carbon-neutral military stations. Major General S K Shrivastava, Chief of Staff, Sudarshan Chakra Corps, inaugurated the seminar, emphasizing the strategic importance of reducing dependence on conventional energy sources while maintaining optimal mission readiness.

The event featured comprehensive panel discussions covering three key areas: innovative construction technologies, renewable energy integration, and climate-resilient infrastructure development. Distinguished participants from premier institutions including IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IISD, CDRI, TERI, and BMTPC contributed their expertise, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development (DORD), IIT Kanpur, said, “These seminars are a crucial step towards modernizing military infrastructure. By combining IIT Kanpur’s research expertise with the Indian Army’s operational requirements, we are creating a blueprint for sustainable military installations that will serve as a model for armed forces worldwide. Our institution is proud to contribute to this vital initiative that bridges technological innovation with national security needs.”

Shri Ishwer Datt, IDSE, who played a key role in organizing the event, highlighted the practical implications of the discussions: “This seminar is a unique opportunity to bring together experts from diverse fields to discuss practical and scalable solutions for military infrastructure. The participation of industry leaders, academia, and policymakers ensures that the insights shared today will lead to actionable policies and implementations. MES remains committed to adopting the latest technologies to create infrastructure that is not only robust and mission-ready but also aligned with global best practices in sustainability.”

The seminar, organized under HQ Chief Engineer Bhopal Zone’s aegis, achieved broad reach through virtual participation from 50 military stations across India, ensuring widespread dissemination of innovative practices and technological advancements. This marks the second in a series following the successful World Earth Day 2024 event at Jhansi Military Station. Industry facilitator Progression Global played a crucial role in bringing together key stakeholders, ensuring the event’s success in fostering meaningful dialogue between military leadership, academia, and industry experts.

This initiative emphasizes the Indian Army’s commitment to embracing sustainable practices while enhancing its operational capabilities through technological advancement. The outcomes of this seminar are expected to significantly influence future military infrastructure development policies and implementation strategies.
